Riding the Roads of Cornwall & Devon: A Boss-Level Cycling Experience

London, England – As the video game world knows, big bosses are the ultimate test for gamers. They push players to their limits and reward them with a sense of accomplishment when defeated. But what do these bosses have to do with cycling the length of the UK?

According to avid cyclist and University of Bath student, James, a lot. He explains that the ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats is like facing two big bosses – Devon and Cornwall. These two counties are infamous among cyclists, from professionals to first-timers, for their challenging terrain and unpredictable weather.

James recalls his first encounter with these “bosses” over a decade ago when he attempted to cycle 150 miles to Cornwall for a Sunday lunch with a friend. He had no GPS, only a list of road numbers, but was confident in his ability. However, it was a nondescript hill in Cornwall that finally broke him, and he found himself slumped on a bright blue bench by the side of the road, shedding tears of frustration.

This “Crying Bench” has now become a reference point for other cyclists, particularly those taking part in Bike the UK for MS trips. It serves as a reminder that no matter the level of skill or speed, everyone experiences the same emotions and challenges while facing these big bosses.

But it’s not all despair and tears in Devon and Cornwall. The hilly terrain can also be a source of motivation and camaraderie when racing with friends. And when riders reach the top of the final hill and see the coast stretching out before them, it’s a sign that they are close to their goal, whether that be Land’s End or John O’Groats.

However, for those heading from Land’s End to John O’Groats, the realisation that all of the challenging terrain is behind them comes when they reach Exeter. James describes the feeling as “unpicking a lock, solving a puzzle, and persisting through a head-to-head.” And for some, this sense of accomplishment may even lead them to return for another “level.”

James and his team will be embarking on a trip from Land’s End to John O’Groats this July to raise funds for MS. And while they may face the same challenges as those who have gone before them, they also have the added motivation of supporting a worthy cause.

Pressat is proud to support James and his team in their journey and encourages others to join in and support their efforts. For more information, visit https://pressat.co.uk/.
