Hundreds of Rural Nigerians Now Have Access to Safe Drinking Water thanks to New Borehole Project

Hereford, UK – In a bid to improve access to clean water in Africa, UK-based charity organization Hope Spring Water has successfully completed a new community borehole project in Ido-Osun, Osun State.

Funded through donations generated by Hope Spring eCards and contributions from supporters and volunteers, the Ido-Osun Borehole Project is expected to benefit over 400 residents, providing them with a reliable source of safe drinking water and reducing their dependence on contaminated sources.

Prior to the project, families in Ido-Osun had to travel long distances to collect water from unsafe ponds, uncovered wells, and seasonal streams. This posed a significant risk to their health and limited their opportunities for education, employment, and family life.

However, the completion of the borehole project has brought about positive changes in the community. Fatima, a resident, shared her experience, saying, “Before, I had to wake up before sunrise to fetch water from a pond that was nearly 30 minutes away. Now, I only have to walk a few minutes to collect clean water close to my home. My children can now leave for school on time, and our daily lives have completely changed.”

Hope Spring worked closely with local leaders, women’s groups, teachers, and healthcare workers to carry out a detailed community assessment before commencing the project. Community members were actively involved in the process, helping to identify the borehole location and establishing a local water management committee.

Drilling began in May 2026 and reached a depth of approximately 120 meters to access a sustainable underground aquifer. The completed system includes a 1,500-liter elevated storage tank, concrete collection areas, and improved drainage to promote hygiene and long-term sustainability.

The project has already started delivering significant social benefits. A community health worker reported a noticeable decrease in cases of diarrhea since the water system became operational, stating that “safe water is medicine.” Local education leaders also observed improvements, with pupils arriving at school with more energy due to no longer having to spend hours collecting water before classes.

Despite facing challenges such as difficult underground rock formations and seasonal rainfall, the project was successfully completed in June 2026.

According to Hope Spring spokesperson Mr. Tomi, “The Ido-Osun Borehole Project is a testament to how access to clean water can transform health, education, and economic opportunities in a community. Every eCard purchased and every donation made by our supporters directly contributes to projects like this, helping communities build healthier and more sustainable futures.”

While millions of people in Nigeria still lack access to safe drinking water, Hope Spring hopes to deliver similar projects in other underserved communities with additional funding.
