New Industry Report Declares Norwich as Britain’s Leader in Home Gym Usage

Norwich has been named as the city with the highest number of home gyms built per person in the UK, according to The UK Home Gym Report 2026. The report, published by Sprung Gym Flooring, one of the UK’s leading gym flooring suppliers, has analyzed data from over six years and 55,000 home gym installations across the country.

The report ranks British cities based on the number of home gym constructions per 100,000 residents, with Norwich topping the list at around 46 orders per 100,000. This is approximately eight times higher than London’s rate. Following closely behind Norwich are Reading, Preston, and Cambridge. Although London has the highest number of home gym installations overall, it ranks near the bottom in terms of installations per person. The report suggests that this could be due to the high number of flats and limited space in the city.

The data also challenges the long-held belief that January is the peak season for home gym building. According to the report, November 2025, driven by Black Friday sales, was the busiest month for home gym constructions, surpassing January by 6%. Additionally, the combined sales of May and June 2026 were 8% higher than those of January and February, indicating a more evenly spread demand throughout the year due to the popularity of garden gyms and garage conversions.

Other notable findings from the report include the record-high average order value for home gyms in 2026, a 22% increase from the lockdown era of 2021. This is attributed to the shift from single-mat purchases to full-room builds, indicating that home gyms have become a permanent fixture in British homes rather than a passing trend during the pandemic.

The report also highlights the impact of HYROX, an indoor fitness race, on the demand for functional training spaces. Searches for this type of event have increased from a few dozen a month in 2020 to over 150,000 a month in 2026, reshaping the market’s preference for fitness equipment. Additionally, the report notes a change in how Britons research fitness purchases, with Microsoft’s Copilot AI citing the company’s guides 13,400 times in a single quarter.

Founder of Sprung Gym Flooring, Richard McKay, stated, “The data challenges the common belief that London and January are the peak for home gym building. Instead, it shows that Norwich and November are the top contenders. The home gym has evolved from a temporary solution during lockdown to a planned and year-round feature in homes across mid-sized Britain.”

McKay also commented on the equipment choices of consumers, saying, “We have noticed that 85% of the rubber tiles we sell are the standard 20mm thickness. People have become more financially savvy and are only investing in heavy-duty tiles where they are needed, rather than over-buying thickness for the entire room.”
