Stirling Highland Games Committee Announces Former Scotland International Hooker as Honorary Chieftain for 2024 Gathering

Stirling, Scotland- The Stirling Highland Games Committee is pleased to announce that former Scotland International hooker Kevin McKenzie has been appointed as the Honorary Chieftain for the highly anticipated 2024 Stirling Highland Games. McKenzie, known for his dedication and passion for playing at the highest level, will preside over this year’s event on Saturday 17th August.

McKenzie, who now works as an after-dinner speaker, began his rugby career at the young age of 7 with Stirling County RFC minis. He went on to represent Scotland at various age levels, including U15, U18, and Scottish Schools U19. He also captained the Scotland U21 team and played for the Scotland B internationals. In addition, McKenzie proudly wore the No. 43 jersey for Glasgow Warriors and captained Stirling County RFC during the mid-1990s, including a game against the Barbarians at Forthbank Stadium.

Despite sitting on the bench 25 times during his international career, McKenzie earned 14 caps between 1993 and 1998, representing Scotland in the 1995 Rugby World Cup and touring with the team to Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia.

In addition to his impressive rugby career, McKenzie remains committed to his local club, Stirling County RFC, and continues to support and fundraise for the team. His dedication to the club embodies the values of community, sportsmanship, and preservation that are at the heart of the Highland Games.

Commenting on his appointment, McKenzie expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity to serve as the Honorary Chieftain, stating, “I am incredibly proud and honored to be chosen as the Chieftain of the Stirling Highland Games. It is a great recognition of my local Stirling heritage and roots.”

McKenzie also highlighted the importance of the Stirling Highland Games in celebrating Scottish culture and fostering a sense of community. He said, “The Stirling Highland Games is not only a fantastic celebration of Scottish culture, but it also brings together people from all over the world to commemorate its heritage and support the athletes competing on the day.”

President of the Stirling Highland Games Committee, Matt McGrandles, expressed his delight at having McKenzie as this year’s Honorary Chieftain, stating, “We are thrilled to have Kevin as our Honorary Chieftain for the 2024 Stirling Highland Games. Having played alongside him at club and district level, I am well aware of his passion for rugby. His commitment and leadership on the field were inspiring, and we are sure he will bring the same energy to our Gathering. My committee and I look forward to welcoming him to our event.”

The Stirling Highland Games is set to take place in Stirling on Saturday 17th August this year. The event organisers, Ceangail, are looking to build on the success of last year’s event with traditional highland games competitions, a trader’s village featuring street food and craft beers, as well as market traders and producers. Additionally, there will be a creative arts offering to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the Stirling Burgh.
