University of Vienna Makes Debut in Top 100 of THE Ranking

Vienna, Austria – The University of Vienna has achieved a significant milestone by ranking 95th in this year’s THE World University Rankings. This accomplishment marks the first time an Austrian university has been listed among the top 100 universities worldwide.

The university has shown exceptional performance in the categories of research, internationalization, teaching, and industry engagement, despite facing tough competition on a global scale.

Rector Sebastian Schütze expressed his delight at this achievement, stating that “This excellent ranking result is the outcome of a long-term strategic focus on positioning the University of Vienna as a leading international university. It reflects our commitment to excellence in teaching and research in various fields, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and life sciences. This recognition also serves as a testament to our efforts towards internationalization and recruitment.”

The University of Vienna has shown remarkable progress over the years, consistently improving its ranking since 2018. In just seven years, it has risen by an impressive 70 positions, from #165 among 1,103 universities in 2018 to #95 among 2,191 universities in 2025.

The university’s performance in the categories of international orientation, such as the proportion of international researchers, students, and publications, and research quality, including the number of highly cited journals, has been particularly noteworthy.
