Universities can be fertile grounds for innovation, with many young minds eager to turn their studies into real-world careers. 
But which universities have produced the most entrepreneurial talent? And, which universities have created the businesses turning over £10.3bn?
To reveal which UK universities are fostering the most successful business ventures the money.co.uk business insurance experts have delved into the latest data from HESA.
  • The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has seen the most businesses formed that are still active today (1,067).
  • The University of Cambridge has seen its start-ups attracting the highest investments, with a total external investment of £2.0 billion.

  • The University of Cambridge has also produced the businesses that employ the most people, with 22,908 full-time employees working across all categories.

  • The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has the most active firms that survived three years (902).

  • The University of Bedfordshire has produced the most social enterprises (105).

  • In terms of turnover, the University of Cambridge leads the way, with an estimated total turnover of £10.3 billion, primarily from formal spin-offs not owned by the university, which account for a staggering £7.6 billion.
  • Cambridge’s long-standing rival, Oxford, comes in second, with an estimated turnover of £614.7 million. Unlike Cambridge, the most substantial source of Oxford’s turnover comes from spin-offs with some HEP ownership, which generates £497.3 million.
  • Queen’s University Belfast is the third on the list, with a total turnover of £459 million. The university’s turnover primarily comes from spin-offs with some HEP ownership (£346.2 million) and formal spin-offs not owned by the university (£112.8 million).
