Germany Urged to Revive Innovation and Boost Economic Growth for a Stronger Europe
Gütersloh, Germany – In a recent press conference, the Bertelsmann Stiftung presented its proposals for Germany’s future growth and prosperity. The foundation, a non-profit organization committed to shaping the future, emphasized the importance of innovation and digital sovereignty for a stable democracy and a competitive Europe.
According to Bertelsmann Stiftung executive board chairman Hannes Ametsreiter, a strong and sustainable market economy is the foundation of a stable democracy and social cohesion. “We must not allow the future to simply happen; we must shape it,” he stated.
To achieve this, the Bertelsmann Stiftung recommends increasing investments in research and innovation to at least 3.5% of the country’s gross domestic product. They also propose better utilization of society’s entrepreneurial potential and encouraging the younger generation’s participation in politics.
“We need to strengthen the population’s confidence in politics and democracy by promoting greater participation and implementing bold reforms,” said Daniela Schwarzer, a member of the board. She also highlighted the importance of protecting democratic institutions and addressing disinformation.
In addition to domestic measures, the Bertelsmann Stiftung stresses the need for a strong and sovereign Europe. They propose initiatives such as treating data as a resource for innovation and securing critical digital infrastructure with European legislation.
“We need a digitally sovereign Europe that reduces technological dependencies and prioritizes the principles of the rule of law, sustainability, tolerance, diversity, and the common good,” said Brigitte Mohn, a member of the board.
The Bertelsmann Stiftung, founded in 1977 by Reinhard Mohn, is dedicated to promoting education, democracy, digitization, Europe’s future, and a sustainable social market economy. They urge all stakeholders to work together to ensure Germany’s return to a pioneering innovation and a leading role in Europe.
