Majority of Surveyed Drivers Not Interested in Purchasing an EV

New Survey Shows Majority of UK Drivers Still Not Ready to Make the Switch to Electric Cars

According to a recent survey conducted by Refused Car Finance, around two-thirds of non-EV drivers in the UK have no plans to switch to an electric car anytime soon. The survey asked customers if they would consider an electric car as their next vehicle, and a majority stated they would not.

Despite the heavy promotion of electric cars as being better for the environment, cheaper to run, and more fuel-efficient, it seems these incentives are not enough to convince UK drivers to make the switch. The main concerns cited by these drivers were the high cost of purchasing an EV, limited mileage capacity, and the availability of charging points in the UK.

The survey found that the cost of buying a brand-new EV can be higher than other models due to the use of newer and more expensive technology, as well as their limited production numbers. However, consumers have the option to spread the cost through financing or consider purchasing a second-hand EV.

Another concern for drivers was the range of electric cars and the time it takes to recharge them. When asked about their expectations for the average mileage capacity of an electric car in 2024, 40% of respondents accurately guessed between 181 and 240 miles. In reality, the average mileage of an EV in 2024 is around 211 miles, though it can vary depending on the make and model.

The lack of charging points across the UK was also a major concern for drivers, with many worried they would not be able to reach a charger before their car ran out of battery. Currently, there are over 53,000 charging points available in the UK, but the government aims to increase this number to 300,000 by 2030 in order to encourage more drivers to adopt electric cars and reach their 2025 Net Zero target.

Interestingly, among the customers surveyed who already owned an EV, 66.7% said they were satisfied with their purchase and no longer saw the appeal of petrol and diesel options. They cited low running costs, zero emissions, and a better driving experience as the main reasons for their satisfaction.

The survey was conducted by Refused Car Finance, a bad credit car finance broker, to gather insights on how drivers currently feel about buying and owning electric cars. With the 2035 petrol and diesel car ban looming, it is inevitable that drivers will have to switch to electric cars in the future. However, this research suggests that many UK drivers are not yet ready to make the switch to zero-emission vehicles.
