“Join the Call to Participate in a Training and Expedition to Study Microplastic and Climate Impact in Polar Regions”

“Clean Planet Peninsula Project Set to Continue after Successful Pilot Year”

The Clean Planet Foundation is pleased to announce the continuation of the Clean Planet Peninsula project, following a successful pilot year in 2023. The project, which was featured on the BBC, aims to educate and take action for the sustainable use of plastics and the reduction of carbon emissions. The 3-year journey will provide an immersive training course for 25 individuals in August 2024, followed by expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic in 2025 and 2026.

The Clean Planet Foundation is inviting individuals who demonstrate a distinct interest or focus in microplastics or climate science to join the project. This opportunity is open to anyone who can show how their research in the polar regions will benefit the global understanding of these critical environmental issues and contribute to worldwide conservation efforts.

The project will be led by renowned UK polar explorer Antony Jinman, who made history as the 12th Briton to ski solo to both the North and South Poles. The Clean Planet Foundation is also collaborating with the UK Polar Network (UKPN) and other partners from academic institutions to ensure a diverse and innovative program.

This program is designed as a stepping stone for future projects and to leave a legacy of innovation in polar research and environmental conservation. The ultimate goal is to provide early-career scientists with practical fieldwork experience in the polar regions, particularly in the areas of plastic pollution and the impact of climate change.

The multi-year program will include a UK field course in August 2024, followed by an Arctic expedition in October 2025 and a High Skills training trip to Norway and Finland in April 2026. The final phase will involve a voyage expedition to Antarctica in December 2026.

The project is open to research students and early-career scientists from diverse backgrounds who are interested in conducting research in remote areas, including the polar regions. Applicants must be above 18 years old, residents of the United Kingdom, and willing to participate in all phases of the project from 2024 to 2027. The project is committed to creating an inclusive and diverse learning environment and will keep at least 20% of places available for individuals from low-income backgrounds.

The Clean Planet Foundation, the lead sponsor of the project, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sustainable use of plastics and reducing carbon emissions. The foundation welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and is committed to diversity and inclusivity.

The project organizers will be responsible for all necessary logistics and have received detailed feedback from the pilot year to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. While the project will cover core costs, participants will be required to cover the cost of transport within the UK. However, food, specialist equipment, and international travel will be covered by the project.

Interested individuals can apply by visiting the Clean Planet Peninsula project’s website between February 20th and May 24th. The application link is https://www.cleanplanet.com/peninsula.
