Cyprus: The Divided Island Secures Global Distribution as It Makes Waves at European Film Festivals

/**New International Distribution Deal for Cyprus Documentary Marks Exciting Festival Journey**

A documentary exploring one of Europe’s enduring political conflicts has secured an international distribution agreement that will expand its reach to global audiences. “Cyprus: The Divided Island,” directed by journalist and writer David Castillo and produced by Nuuk TV Entertainment, has signed with Espresso Media International, a British firm specializing in the worldwide distribution of documentaries and factual content.

Under this agreement, the documentary will be positioned in the international audiovisual market, making it available to broadcasters, platforms, and other operators across various territories. The film will be presented in both 1 × 90-minute and 2 × 45-minute formats, featuring English and Spanish versions that include voiceovers and graphics to facilitate broader adaptation and distribution.

The distribution agreement coincides with the documentary’s debut on the international festival circuit. It has been selected for the Official Selection of the Altavilla Film Fest – Il Trionfo Cristiano di San Pellegrino 2026 in Italy, and has earned a finalist nomination at the Indie European Cinema & Screenplay Festival 2026 in Oslo. These festival selections mark the documentary’s inaugural appearances on the international film stage, paving the way for a larger audience to engage with the story of Cyprus.

“Cyprus: The Divided Island” delves into the long-standing political tension on the island, articulated through personal testimonies from both sides of the Green Line. The film addresses the human and political ramifications of Cyprus’s division, collecting insights from a range of voices, including President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides; former President of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar; and Colin Stewart, former Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and head of the UN peacekeeping mission on the island. It also features numerous testimonials from Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot citizens, encapsulating the lived experiences of those affected by the ongoing division.

The documentary held a significant public presentation in September 2025 at Nicosia’s historic Ledra Palace, situated within the United Nations-administered buffer zone. This event attracted diplomatic and institutional representatives, as well as community members from both sides of the island. Since then, the film has been screened in both northern and southern Cyprus, as well as in Spain, where it had a major premiere at Madrid’s Capitol cinema, drawing an audience of more than one thousand.

David Castillo expressed his enthusiasm for the new distribution partnership, stating, “After so many years working on this project, the agreement with Espresso represents a decisive step towards bringing the story of Cyprus to audiences in many other countries. Our first selections at European festivals are also a wonderful way to begin this new chapter and to see that a story so deeply connected to a small Mediterranean island can resonate far beyond its borders.”

The project aims to provide a comprehensive perspective on the conflict that has influenced life on the island for over fifty years. Through political, diplomatic, and personal narratives, the production examines Cyprus’s tumultuous history and current realities, while contemplating potential pathways for resolution.

With the collaboration of Espresso Media International, “Cyprus: The Divided Island” embarks on a new phase focused on international outreach while continuing its journey through various festivals and special screenings.
