Can the Ocean Be a Climate Savior? Enhancing Marine Carbon Dioxide Absorption

New World Ocean Review Released, Examining Ocean’s Role in Climate Change Mitigation

Hamburg/Kiel – In a world where climate change is a pressing issue, the new edition of World Ocean Review (WOR) delves into the potential of the ocean to aid in carbon dioxide removal (CDR). This eighth edition, titled “The ocean – a climate champion? How to boost marine carbon dioxide uptake”, is now available for free download from https://worldoceanreview.com/en/.

With contributions from over 20 scientists, WOR 8 examines the current state of knowledge surrounding ocean-based CDR techniques and aims to initiate a much-needed debate on whether humankind should intervene further in the ocean to protect the climate.

According to Nikolaus Gelpke, initiator of the WOR project and Managing Director of maribus gGmbH, “If the warming of the Earth continues at the present rate, a collapse of nature and society is inevitable. In order to reach our climate target, we must resort to methods which are equally impactful and existential.” He hopes that this edition of WOR will raise awareness of the necessary measures and their impacts.

The WOR project is a collaboration between maribus gGmbH, the German Marine Research Consortium (KDM), the Kiel Future Ocean Network, and the International Ocean Institute. WOR 8 has the support of all German marine research institutions and organizations.

The new edition of WOR provides an overview of the role of the ocean in the Earth’s carbon cycle and explores the potential for marine carbon dioxide removal. It also discusses the benefits, risks, and knowledge gaps surrounding various ocean-based CDR techniques, from restoration and expansion of coastal ecosystems to interventions in marine chemistry and carbon storage deep under the ocean floor.

“The themes addressed in WOR 8 will continue to preoccupy us for many years to come,” says Prof. Dr. Martin Visbeck, Co-Spokesperson of Future Ocean. “Research on this topic is future-focused, and the new edition of WOR provides significant impetus for this scientific field.”

WOR is published every two years in German and English and has a worldwide readership of policy-makers, business and civil society stakeholders. It aims to provide up-to-date background information on relevant ocean-related issues and is aimed at anyone wishing to have a say on marine conservation and use.
