Humberside County Scouts to Take on Challenging International Expedition to Vietnam
This summer, a group of 14 young people aged 16 to 25, accompanied by four dedicated adult volunteers, will embark on an ambitious adventure to Vietnam. This expedition, known as the Explorer Belt, is one of Scouting’s most demanding international challenges.
Hailing from Scout Groups across Humberside County, the participants of this expedition are supported by Humberside County Scouts, which covers East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. The Explorer Belt is not just an ordinary expedition, but a unique international award that promotes personal growth, resilience, and deep cultural engagement.
The three youth teams will journey over 1,000 miles from Ho Chi Minh City in the south to Hanoi in the north, navigating through bustling cities, remote landscapes, and diverse communities. This journey will test their planning, teamwork, and problem-solving skills as they complete cultural projects, manage their own budget, and immerse themselves in everyday Vietnamese life.
Preparations for this expedition have been underway for months. The young participants have taken part in local training camps, where they have had the opportunity to try Vietnamese cuisine, learn basic phrases, and develop an understanding of the country’s culture and customs. These experiences have equipped the group with the practical skills and mindset needed for success in such a demanding environment.
To prepare for navigating metropolitan areas, the team also participated in the London Monopoly Run, an intense challenge where Scouts raced across the capital using public transport, simulating the type of travel and quick thinking they will need in Vietnam’s major cities.
One of the expedition’s volunteer leaders, Simon Price, shared, “The Explorer Belt isn’t just about travel; it’s about discovery. These young people will be pushed out of their comfort zones, but they will return with new skills, broader perspectives, and stories that will last a lifetime. They are brilliant ambassadors for Scouting in Humberside.”
