The School Games National Finals is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year as it returns from September 3rd-6th, 2026. The event, which brings together talented young athletes from across the home nations, has been a pinnacle in showcasing the best of young sporting talent since its inception in 2006.
Created to give young people the opportunity to experience a major multi-sport event, the School Games National Finals has served as a launchpad for many young athletes over the past two decades. Notable alumni include Olympic and Paralympic champions such as Dina Asher-Smith, Adam Ramsey-Peaty, Ellie Simmonds, Alex Yee, and Hannah Cockroft. Their success stories highlight the vital role that the School Games National Finals has played in nurturing young talent and providing them with access to a major sporting event as a platform for further achievements.
This year’s event, which will take place at Loughborough University and will be delivered by Youth Sport Trust, aims to not only celebrate traditional ideas of sporting success but also focus on the personal development and growth that young people gain from participating in sports. The competition will challenge the notion of success solely based on medal table results and instead, recognize and celebrate individual progress and personal goals.
The 2026 event will also incorporate insights from the Wired to Win report, which was based on research conducted during the School Games National Finals 2024. The report identified the barriers that can limit participation, access, and enjoyment for young athletes and aims to address them through this year’s event.
To ensure that the event remains inclusive and accessible for all young athletes, the 2026 School Games National Finals will introduce the new Elevate program. This program, co-designed by Sport England, Youth Sport Trust, and Greenhouse Sports, will provide 45 promising athletes from under-resourced communities with access to professional sporting mentors and major competition experiences.
The 2026 event will feature 12 sports, including 3×3 Basketball, Athletics, BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing, Cricket, Hockey, Modern Pentathlon, Netball, Triathlon, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Tennis, and the new discipline of Obstacle Course Experience within Modern Pentathlon, which will debut in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Phil Smith, Executive Director of Sporting Systems at Sport England, expressed his excitement for the upcoming event, stating, “The School Games National Finals showcases the incredible talent and dedication of young athletes, and as we celebrate the achievements of the past two decades, we’re also looking ahead. While competition remains an important part of sport, positive and fun experiences (that don’t necessarily end in a podium finish) are what really help young people develop a lasting love of being active that continues far beyond their time in school.”
Youth Sport Trust CEO Ali Oliver MBE also emphasized the importance of creating a supportive and encouraging environment for young athletes, stating, “The Wired to Win findings reinforced the importance of creating environments where every athlete feels supported and encouraged to enjoy the experience of competing. When we do this for young people, we create mentally stronger and resilient athletes.”
She also added, “It is incredibly inspiring to look back at the athletes who have competed at the School Games National Finals and gone on to become Olympic, Paralympic, and Commonwealth champions. Their achievements show what can happen when young people are given opportunity and the right experiences.”
