“Third of UK Yoga Teachers Lack Insurance, Survey Finds”
According to a recent survey conducted by Insure4Sport, it has been revealed that approximately one-third of yoga teachers in the UK do not have their own dedicated insurance to cover their teaching practice.
While the sample size of the survey was small, this finding reflects a common trend seen by insurers: claims related to student injuries, slips and falls, or alleged negligence can result in significant costs for teachers. Without proper insurance, teachers are personally responsible for any compensation and legal expenses that may arise.
In today’s society, where insurance is not legally required, many studios, councils, landlords, and event organizers expect yoga teachers to provide proof of public liability and professional indemnity cover before allowing them to use their space.
The issue of first aid training is also closely linked, as insurance policies typically do not cover claims if an injury occurs while there is no trained first aider present. Therefore, having a current First Aid certificate is crucial in ensuring that insurance cover remains valid in case of any incidents.
To address this gap, the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) offers an Associate Teaching Membership specifically designed for teachers who want comprehensive protection without unnecessary complexity or cost.
For an annual fee of £108, teachers with over 300 hours of training through a reputable school can access:
– Comprehensive teaching insurance, including public liability and professional indemnity cover
– Best-practice standards for first aid and risk management
– Hundreds of resources to support their teaching, including free CPD, guidance documents, templates, and marketing tools
Whether currently teaching, returning to teaching, or just starting out, these survey findings serve as a valuable reminder for yoga teachers to ensure they have the right insurance cover in place.
