Unique Autumn Stay for Walkers Offered by Church in Mid Wales

“New “Champing” Site at St Gwrhai’s Church in Penstrowed, Powys Offers Unique Overnight Accommodation for Walkers Exploring the Welsh Countryside”

A new opportunity for walkers looking to explore the Welsh countryside has emerged this autumn, as St Gwrhai’s Church in Penstrowed, Powys, becomes one of only two “champing” sites in Wales. This new trend, a combination of “church” and “camping”, offers exclusive overnight access to historic churches that are no longer used for regular services.

St Gwrhai’s Church, which was built in the 1860s on a site with Christian heritage dating back to the 6th century, provides a peaceful and unique base for walkers to explore the scenic routes of Mid Wales. Situated beside the River Severn, the church offers access to various walking routes in the area.

Accommodating up to four guests, St Gwrhai’s Church includes a fully equipped kitchen in the adjacent hall, an indoor toilet, and secure space for bikes. Dogs are also welcome to join their owners on their champing adventure. Most guests typically stay for one or two nights, with solo travelers, small groups, and families all taking advantage of the opportunity during the first season.

Conveniently located an hour away from both Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury, St Gwrhai’s Church is perfectly situated for exploring the Cambrian Mountains, which are only a 20-minute drive away. The area also boasts nine Dark Sky Discovery sites, making it an ideal destination for stargazing enthusiasts. Additionally, the famous 215-mile walking route, the Severn Way, begins nearby, and guided walking groups are available for those looking for a more organized experience.

Stephen Leggett, who coordinates the champing initiative at St Gwrhai’s Church, shared his enthusiasm for the positive feedback they have received from guests, saying, “We’ve had walkers, cyclists, and families all staying at St Gwrhai’s this season, and the feedback has been fantastic. It’s a peaceful base for exploring the Cambrian Mountains and the Severn Way, and a unique way to experience the landscape and heritage of Mid Wales.”

Reviews from guests have praised the warm welcome they received and the comfortable camp beds provided. Anthea Murr, who stayed at the church, commented, “The stained glass window in the church created beautiful light and the camp beds were comfy. We had lovely weather and made good use of the garden bench to enjoy the views of the surrounding hills while having a cuppa.”

The second champing site in Wales is located at St Dona’s Church in Beaumaris, Anglesey. This church sits nestled in the hillside overlooking Llanddona beach, with stunning views of Red Wharf Bay and Benllech in the distance. Both champing sites in Wales are located within the Diocese of Bangor, which actively supports its churches in diversifying their income and attracting walkers, outdoor enthusiasts, and visitors through initiatives such as champing.

Bookings for St Gwrhai’s Church and St Dona’s Church are available through the Champing website, with stays priced per person per night. Guests can enjoy exclusive use of the church during their stay.
