“UK Faces Plastic Pollution Crisis in Waterways, Boris Johnson’s Father Supports STEM Novel for Children”

Stanley Johnson, a veteran environmentalist, former MEP, and father of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has thrown his support behind a new adventure novel tackling microplastics, citizen science, and youth action. This comes as alarming data shows that more than 90% of English rivers contain toxic PFAS chemicals, raising concerns about the long-term impact of plastic pollution on the UK’s health and environment.

The novel, titled Ellie Ment and the Material Matter, has been published by the not-for-profit Clean Planet Foundation. Johnson has written the foreword for the book, calling it “nothing short of exhilarating.” He praises the book for making science exciting and accessible, while also addressing important environmental issues in a fun and engaging way.

The story follows an 11-year-old girl who discovers a secret science society, uncovers an environmental cover-up, and uses her scientific knowledge to challenge the adult world around her. It blends elements of quantum physics with a touch of magic, making science relatable and exciting for young readers.

As concerns over “forever chemicals” and climate anxiety among young people continue to rise, the book has received praise from readers and educators alike. It has already climbed to the #1 spot on Amazon’s “Most Gifted” list for a STEM category, received over 100 positive reviews on Goodreads, and has been hailed as “perfect classroom science fiction” and “a brilliant way to inspire environmental curiosity” by teachers.

Johnson emphasizes the importance of the book’s themes, stating, “These themes – so central to environmental action – shine here through the eyes of young characters who must navigate what is right, what is possible, and what is simply necessary.”

Author Bertie Stephens, who is also a founder of the Clean Planet Foundation, believes that the book’s blend of real-world issues and accessible STEM learning is what makes it so appealing to readers. He believes that Johnson’s endorsement gives weight to the book’s message, stating, “This isn’t just fiction, it’s a spark.”

Ellie Ment and the Material Matter is available in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle editions at major retailers such as Amazon, Waterstones, Foyles, and Browns Books. Educational resources for schools and libraries can also be found on the book’s website, EllieMent.com.

Stanley Johnson is a renowned environmentalist and author who has worked on shaping global environmental policy. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to conservation and sustainability, including the Greenpeace Prize for Outstanding Services to the Environment and the RSPB Medal for Services to Nature Conservation.

The Clean Planet Foundation is a UK-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to tackling plastic pollution, advancing climate education, and empowering communities through science, storytelling, and action. Through various projects such as the HAPSIE comic series and the Seed Collection Project, the organization aims to connect people with nature and drive systemic change from the ground up.
