TutorExtra Reveals Newcastle Tutors Are Supporting Students’ Emotional Wellbeing

Last Updated on: 26th August 2025, 05:25 pm

Tutoring platform TutorExtra reports that an increasing number of Newcastle families are seeking tutors not just for academic improvement but to rebuild children’s confidence and motivation.

Following years of disrupted learning, many parents say their children are struggling emotionally more than academically, creating new expectations for tutoring services across the city.

According to TutorExtra’s data, since 2024, there has been a marked rise in parents in Newcastle highlighting confidence, focus, and self-belief when searching for tutors.

“Our son didn’t need help with maths. He needed help believing in himself,” said Claire R., a parent from Gosforth. “His tutor gave him the confidence that school just couldn’t.”

“We used to be asked about exam results,” said Mark T., an English tutor based in Jesmond. “Now it’s more like: ‘Can you help my child come out of their shell?’”

Although maths and English remain in high demand, more families are choosing tutors based on their ability to connect emotionally with students. For many children, their tutor has become a trusted mentor — sometimes the only adult they feel truly listens.

The shift comes as schools face rising pressures, including bigger class sizes and increasing concerns over student mental health and wellbeing.

TutorExtra, which features hundreds of tutors across the North East, says parents increasingly see tutoring as a space for both academic growth and emotional support. One parent even described her daughter’s weekly session as being “part lesson, part therapy.”

“We’re hearing the same thing again and again from Newcastle parents: ‘We just want our child to feel confident again,’” said a TutorExtra spokesperson.

“A confident child is a capable child. Tutoring done right can support both.”
