Trump Tariffs Add £120,000 to Surespan Infrastructure Project Costs

Last Updated on: 17th April 2025, 03:07 pm

A newly imposed 25% tariff on imported aluminium by the Trump administration is now significantly increasing costs for vital infrastructure works across the United States.

Surespan Limited, a UK-based specialist in industrial access solutions supplying American public infrastructure, has been hit hard by the tariff, which came into effect on 12 March 2025. One month on, the financial effects are beginning to ripple through to the budgets of major public projects.

Tariffs Intensify Budget Pressures Across Infrastructure

One such project—valued initially at $500,000—has seen its total cost rise by $150,000 solely due to the aluminium tariff. Surespan is uniquely qualified to deliver the highly technical components required, leaving no alternative suppliers. As a result, the 25% duty has caused a direct and unavoidable 30% increase in project costs—an overrun that will ultimately fall to US taxpayers. Local authorities warn that these unexpected expenses may lead to reduced services or increased taxation at community level.

“Our team at Surespan is committed to providing essential, high-quality components for American infrastructure. However, these tariffs create unavoidable cost pressures that are ultimately reflected in the price of public projects, placing a direct financial impact on the communities these projects serve,” said Robert Fletcher, Business Development Director at Surespan.

Although the company continues to engage with partners to soften the blow, Fletcher stressed that such levies act as direct surcharges on public projects, leaving limited room for internal efficiencies to absorb the cost.

Wider Impact on Communities and Construction Sectors

Industry experts across the United States are now confirming that the tariffs are elevating prices and delaying progress in sectors ranging from housing to renewable energy. Analysts report that the duties on steel and aluminium are causing price hikes and material shortages, which are hampering wind farm installations, power infrastructure development, and housebuilding.

Homebuilders have described the impact on material costs as “through the roof”, while the knock-on effect on taxpayers includes the risk of higher household bills, reduced services, or diverted public funding. Economists caution that lower- and middle-income communities may be hardest hit by these increased financial pressures.

“Stakeholders in both industry and government are watching closely. The added $150,000 on a single project is a stark example of a nationwide trend: tariff-driven cost surges that ultimately hit the public wallet,” Fletcher continued.

“As infrastructure needs grow and funding is stretched thin, the pressure is on to address how trade policies are impacting the very communities they aim to protect. We are urging media and policy leaders to scrutinise these developments, as the true cost of tariffs becomes increasingly clear in towns and cities across America.”
