Transformative Stroke and Ortho Rehab with geko™ Device Rolled Out at BMC Hospital

Last Updated on: 24th April 2025, 05:51 pm

Sky Medical Technology Ltd, parent company of Firstkind Ltd, has confirmed that the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) Hospital has adopted the geko® device as part of its standard physiotherapy care in both neurological and orthopaedic rehabilitation.

The device is now in widespread use across BMC hospitals, having shown strong results when used alongside conventional therapies. It is being utilised to treat post-stroke spasticity and improve mobility, as well as to manage oedema in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery or suffering orthopaedic trauma. Moreover, its application plays a key role in DVT prevention for patients at risk due to immobility.

The geko® device is a small, self-adhesive, wearable neuromuscular electro-stimulator that is applied to the surface of the skin just below the knee, over the head of the fibula bone. It delivers a gentle electrical pulse, once per second, to the common peroneal nerve, activating the calf and foot muscle pumps, increasing venous, arterial, and microcirculatory blood flow at a rate equal to 60% of walking, effectively replicating the effects of exercise.

BMC Chief Medical Officer, Dr Haridas Rathod, said:

“At the heart of physiotherapy is the goal to enhance a patient’s functional abilities, promote self-reliance, and improve overall quality of life. The geko device delivers on all three. When used immediately following a stroke or orthopaedic surgery, adjunctive use of the geko device not only allows physiotherapy to begin sooner but enables continuation in the home setting. Its ease of use empowers patients to take control and self-manage their rehabilitation. The impact is transformative, resulting in better patient outcomes and optimised resource use. By reducing the hands-on physiotherapist time, the geko device generates significant cost savings for the BMC.”

From distribution partner Curamatix Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Directors Ramen and Subhodeep Mukherjee added:

“We are proud to partner with Sky Medical Technology in bringing the geko device to healthcare institutions across India. The successful integration of the device into BMC Hospital’s physiotherapy programmes is a significant milestone that highlights the device’s versatility and effectiveness in supporting stroke and orthopaedic rehabilitation. As a partner, we have witnessed first-hand how the geko device is reshaping patient care – enabling earlier mobilisation, faster recovery, and ultimately reducing the burden on healthcare systems. We are excited about the future impact this technology will have as we continue expanding its reach across India.”

Sky Medical Technology CEO and Founder Bernard Ross commented:

“We are delighted that the geko device is an integral part of the rehabilitation approach at BMC Hospitals. This partnership is a testament to the growing recognition of the device’s ability to improve patient outcomes across a range of conditions, from stroke recovery to orthopaedic rehabilitation. By seamlessly complementing existing treatments, the geko device not only accelerates recovery but also empowers patients to take control of their rehabilitation journey. It is incredibly rewarding to see how our innovation is helping both patients and healthcare providers achieve more efficient, effective, and cost-saving outcomes.”
