Sheffield Chamber Orchestra has announced its concert lineup for the 2026–27 season, promising a captivating blend of well-loved classics and underappreciated works while highlighting exciting new talent. Building on the momentum of its milestone 75th anniversary, the orchestra continues to expand its reach and artistic offerings across Sheffield.

“Our new season reflects what we love about Sheffield Chamber Orchestra: great music, played with enthusiasm and commitment, and the opportunity to introduce our audiences to composers and musicians they may not have encountered before,” says Julie Ryan, Chair of Sheffield Chamber Orchestra. “We are particularly excited to welcome two outstanding conductors this season and to continue our support for emerging musical talent. We hope audiences will join us for what promises to be a wonderful year of music-making.”

The season will kick off on Saturday, December 5, 2026, at Ecclesall Parish Church with a concert titled New Voices, conducted by Gina Hazell. A conductor and performer noted for her work across the North of England, Gina has gained invaluable experience under the mentorship of distinguished conductors. Her debut performance with SCO will feature a vibrant program that opens with Mendelssohn’s mystical A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture, followed by Dvořák’s lively Czech Suite and Handel’s Concerto Grosso in B-flat major, Op. 6 No. 7. The concert will conclude with Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 1—a significant Romantic composition experiencing a revival.

The second concert on Saturday, March 13, 2027, will showcase a program featuring works from Beethoven, Fauré, Emilie Mayer, and John Rutter, conducted by the esteemed John Lyon. Known for his significant contributions to the local music scene, John brings a wealth of experience to the stage, having previously conducted SCO in numerous acclaimed performances. This concert aims to juxtapose well-known pieces with intriguing selections, encouraging audiences to discover new musical landscapes.

Wrapping up the season on Saturday, May 22, 2027, will be the Accent on Youth concert, also under the direction of John Lyon. This event highlights Sheffield Chamber Orchestra’s commitment to supporting young musicians by providing them the opportunity to perform alongside the established orchestra. The concert is designed to celebrate the talent of the next generation while reinforcing the orchestra’s role as an integral part of the local musical community.

The 2026–27 season promises to deliver an enriching experience, with concerts spanning from Baroque to contemporary works, featuring composers such as Handel, Beethoven, Farrenc, Mayer, and Rutter.

“We want every concert to be more than simply a performance,” Julie Ryan adds. “It should be an experience that brings people together, sparks curiosity and leaves our audiences wanting to hear more.”
