– Focus on the future development of agentic AI and its implications for credit decision-making

As artificial intelligence increasingly influences credit decision-making, the discourse is evolving from technological capabilities to the essential ethical and governance frameworks necessary for building enduring trust. Today, Riverty unveiled its latest report in the Fintech 2040 thought leadership series titled “AI Ethics and Accountability in Hyper Individualised Lending: Pathways to Optimised Consumer Credits.”

This report, developed with insights from AI governance professionals Anita Klingel, Roland Frank, Jan Richard, and Florian Haubold, explores how AI can enhance access to credit while fostering more personalized financial services, all while ensuring transparency, accountability, and fairness are prioritized throughout the decision-making process.

The timing of this report is particularly significant, as financial institutions across Europe are implementing new AI governance frameworks and enhancing operational resilience, thereby positioning responsible AI as a pivotal topic for the future of financial services.

The paper contends that ethics and innovation should not be viewed as opposing forces. Instead, it emphasizes the need for governance models that translate ethical principles into actionable, scalable decision-making. It identifies three critical enablers for responsible AI-powered lending:

– Data sovereignty, allowing consumers meaningful control over their information usage.
– Interoperability, facilitating secure and transparent data sharing.
– Robust process design, ensuring explainability, accountability, and oversight are integrated throughout the credit lifecycle.

These elements collectively pave the way toward credit markets where technological advancement, ethical considerations, and sustainable business practices support one another.

Looking to the future, the paper discusses the imminent rise of agentic AI, where systems transition from mere recommendations to autonomous actions. In the credit sector, such agents could potentially negotiate offers and initiate actions on behalf of consumers or providers. This evolution underscores the necessity for clear mandates, defined limits, human oversight, and avenues for substantial recourse. The authors advocate for the principle of “bounded and contestable autonomy,” suggesting that while AI agents may be granted increased operational freedom, the institutions utilizing them must maintain clear accountability for their outcomes.

“Artificial intelligence gives us new opportunities to improve credit decisions, broaden financial inclusion and better serve customers. But technology alone is never enough,” stated Oliver Kuhaupt, Chief Risk Officer at Riverty.

“As AI becomes more deeply embedded in financial services, ethical principles must be supported by robust governance, transparent decision-making and disciplined risk management. Trust is built when innovation is not only powerful, but also explainable, accountable and resilient.”

This report is the most recent addition to the Fintech 2040 initiative, Riverty’s long-term thought leadership platform that gathers academics, industry professionals, and policymakers to analyze the technologies, governance models, and policy frameworks shaping the future landscape of financial services.
