On Thursday, June 19, 2025, the Can Ruti Campus will host the Drones in Healthcare Conference, where the results of the latest proof of concept for the transport of biological samples via drones in the Northern Metropolitan Region will be presented. The event is organized by the Fundació TIC Salut Social, with the collaboration of the project’s main partners: the Telecommunications and Information Technologies Center, T-Systems, the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital, the Northern Metropolitan Primary Care of the Institut Català de la Salut, the Medical Emergency System, and the BCN Drone Center.
The pilot project, carried out between the Sant Fost – Martorelles Primary Care Center and the Clinical Laboratory of the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, is the first to be carried out in a suburban environment in Catalonia. This initiative is part of the work line started in 2023 with previous tests in the region of La Garrotxa, which already showed very positive results.
The results of the presented report are remarkable:
• 72.3% reduction in transport time
• 99.2% decrease in CO₂ emissions
• Maintenance of pre-analytical sample quality within clinically acceptable parameters
• Particularly positive results in serum glucose
Although there are still regulatory, logistical, and infrastructure barriers, the results reaffirm the potential of drone transport as an efficient, safe, and sustainable option within the Catalan public health system.
The conference on June 19 will include technical presentations, roundtable discussions with the involved parties, and a space for debate on the future of healthcare transport with emerging technologies.
