Rabbi Rene Cassin Writes to Prime Minister, Expressing Concerns about Anti-Migrant Rhetoric

Jewish community leaders have expressed their concern over the anti-migrant rhetoric and policies being implemented by the UK government. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, community leaders highlighted their worries about the rise of far-right movements in the country and globally.

“We are grateful that your government is repealing certain unworkable, unnecessary and illegal policies of the previous government,” the letter stated, referring to the Safety of Rwanda Act and parts of the Illegal Migration Act.

However, the community leaders also expressed their confusion and disagreement with the current government’s immigration and asylum policies. They stated that these policies do not align with morals, legality, economy, or politics. The letter also highlighted concerns about the recent press conference held by the Prime Minister, where he announced plans for stricter immigration measures.

“We are concerned that your government’s policies are weakening the bond between communities, individual protections, and the rule of law across the UK,” the letter continued.

The Jewish community leaders, who have contributed to British society for generations while maintaining their cultural identity, emphasized the importance of celebrating diversity and promoting community cohesion. They stated that experiences have shown that integration and cultural exchange among communities are key to building a strong and united society.

The letter also drew attention to the history of the Jewish community and their understanding of the consequences of closed borders and indifference to human suffering. The community leaders advocated for asylum policies that respect human rights and expressed their belief that a competent and compassionate asylum and immigration system not only protects the vulnerable but also strengthens the moral fabric of society.

The community leaders also raised concerns about how the proposed immigration reforms will limit access to fundamental human rights for British citizens. They highlighted the detrimental impact of these policies on public services, such as the NHS and social care, and called for a reassurance that the government is not pursuing a policy of “performative cruelty.”

In conclusion, the community leaders urged the government to lead with integrity and compassion in its immigration reforms, stating that “the moral fabric and strength of our society are tested by how we treat the most vulnerable and in our ability to uphold human rights.”

The letter was signed by several Jewish community leaders, including Rabbi Herschel Gluck OBE, Rabbi Elli Tikvah Sarah, and Rabbi Aaron Goldstein. It was distributed by pressat.co.uk on Thursday 22 May, 2025.
