Bremervörde (Germany) – The highly anticipated IAA Mobility event has been captivating car enthusiasts with its showcase of cutting-edge innovations, from autonomous driving to advanced safety technologies. However, amidst all the attention on these advancements, one key aspect of comfort is often overlooked – the car seat. With the demand for ergonomic design on the rise, the production of car seats has become increasingly complex, with up to 12 percent of a car’s development costs being attributed to this component.
According to Detlef Detjen, Managing Director of Aktion Gesunder Rücken (AGR) e. V. (Campaign for Healthier Backs), not all car seats advertised as “back-friendly” actually live up to this claim. This is why AGR, an internationally respected organization, offers guidance for back-friendly products, including car seats. In fact, many leading car manufacturers have started offering AGR-certified seats in their models.
Detjen explains, “Sitting still for long periods is a major cause of back problems. An ergonomic seat is the backbone of any healthy journey.” For the past 30 years, AGR’s independent medical commission of experts has been rigorously testing and certifying car seats that are particularly back-friendly. With a network of over 150,000 specialists from various fields, AGR also has a significant influence on industrial development.
“The AGR seal is recognized as a trustworthy quality mark and a reliable guide by the medical community, consumers, and industry alike,” says Detjen. In order to earn the respected AGR seal of approval, a car seat must meet several criteria, including an extendable seat surface, adjustable height and tilt, and four-way lumbar support. These features allow users to find the perfect, individualized setting for their comfort. Additionally, adjustable headrests ensure safety while maintaining an ergonomically correct seating posture, while dynamic seat systems with inflatable cushions provide lateral support when taking corners. Breathable fabrics also help maintain an optimal seat climate.
