Berlin-based GreenTech startup, PLAN-B NET ZERO BESS GmbH, a subsidiary of PLAN-B NET ZERO AG, is making waves in the energy industry with its innovative battery energy storage systems (BESS). The company recently demonstrated how its BESS technology allows businesses and private households to directly profit from the growing imbalance between very low and very high prices on the electricity exchange (EEX).
In 2025, negative electricity prices have become a common occurrence and a defining feature of the energy transition. What was once a burden on the power grid is now a new revenue source for PLAN-B NET ZERO customers.
Germany’s rapid expansion of renewable energy has created a paradox where, on days with high wind and solar activity, there is an oversupply of electricity in the grid. This oversupply drives wholesale prices below zero, forcing producers to pay to deliver their output. In the second quarter of 2025 alone, there were more than 345 hours of negative prices recorded, with a record low of -€250.32 per MWh at the EEX.
This is where PLAN-B NET ZERO’s BESS technology comes in. Equipped with intelligent measurement and control units, the BESS systems communicate with the grid in real-time. When prices turn negative, the storage units automatically charge, allowing customers to be paid for absorbing energy. The stored electricity can then be discharged when prices rise or when customers’ own demand increases. This process, known as energy arbitrage, creates new and stable revenue streams.
Based on extensive modeling, PLAN-B NET ZERO has determined that a typical BESS for prosumers and commercial enterprises pays for itself in less than five years. After that, the system not only generates steady additional income but also provides energy independence and a reliable emergency power supply.
“Our technology has been providing resilience and self-consumption optimization for years. Today, it is proving its true value by turning the market’s biggest challenge – the oversupply of renewable energy – into a direct opportunity for our customers,” said Bradley Mundt, CEO of PLAN-B NET ZERO. “We are showing that a greener future can also be an economically successful one.”
With its BESS division, PLAN-B NET ZERO aims to empower end customers, accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels, and enable a more efficient and decentralized energy system.
