ReBound Returns, a leading omnichannel returns specialist, has announced a 23% decrease in average carbon emissions per parcel during the 2023-24 Peak season, compared to the same period in 2022. This comes as retailers across Europe aim to improve sustainability amidst a surge in Black Friday sales and returns.
With millions of parcels being handled during the Peak season, ReBound has attributed the drop in carbon emissions to targeted sustainability measures. These include the use of greener transport options, improved route planning, and fuller truck loads.
One of the key contributors to the decrease in emissions is the switch to rail transport, with over a quarter of goods now being transported by this method. This can result in a reduction of up to 89% in emissions per shipment. Additionally, ReBound has expanded its use of fully electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as HVO – a renewable diesel made from 100% hydrotreated vegetable oil or animal fats. These alternatives produce up to 89% fewer emissions per kilometre than standard diesel.
Further reductions have been achieved through the maximization of truck capacity, resulting in lower emissions per parcel. Any remaining carbon footprint is then offset through ReBound’s carbon compensation program.
According to a survey of 400 UK retail consumers conducted by ReBound Returns in May 2025, sustainable return management is an important factor for over 70% of customers. Emily McGill, Sustainability Communications Manager at ReBound, stated, “Returns are an inevitable part of retail, particularly after the Golden Quarter, but they don’t have to come with a heavy carbon cost. We’re proud that our work is making a tangible difference in reducing emissions during the most demanding period of the year. The retail sector has a unique opportunity to tackle a growing environmental challenge by optimizing the management of product returns, and we hope that the wider industry will join the charge.”
