Ovacome, the UK’s leading ovarian cancer support charity, has announced that it will be hosting two events in Wales this August. These events aim to raise awareness about ovarian cancer and provide support and information to those affected by the disease.
According to statistics, 7,500 people are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year in the UK, and one in 50 women are expected to receive a diagnosis in their lifetime. Ovarian cancer is classified as an uncommon cancer, and those diagnosed with the disease can often feel isolated. These events aim to provide a sense of community and support for those affected by ovarian cancer.
The first event, a Community and Support event, will take place on Friday 15 August in Brecon. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with the Ovacome support team and learn more about the resources and support available to them. The event will also provide a platform for community organizations in Wales to learn about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.
Liz Waters, Ovacome’s Health Equalities Manager, spoke about the importance of these events, saying, “We are delighted to be visiting Brecon to meet local community organizations and people affected by ovarian cancer. Ovacome is committed to tackling health inequalities, and we know how important it is to meet underserved communities, including those who live in rural areas, to understand how we can remove the barriers that exist when accessing information, diagnosis, treatment, and support for ovarian cancer.”
The second event, a Health and Wellbeing Day, will take place on Saturday 16 August in Cardiff. This event is open to anyone affected by ovarian cancer, including friends and family of those diagnosed. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from experts and participate in workshops focused on living well with a cancer diagnosis. The event also provides a chance to connect with others who have been diagnosed with the disease.
Anna Hudson, head of Ovacome’s Support Services, expressed her excitement for the event, stating, “We’ve not had a chance to provide an event in Wales since 2019, so we’re excited to be returning to Cardiff to meet with our members in Wales. We’ve got a fantastic line-up of speakers, and we’re delighted to be welcoming expert clinician Dr Sadie Jones, as well as experts leading sessions in Diet, Music for Relaxation, and Sound Bath Therapy.”
Amanda, an Ovacome member who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2016, encouraged others affected by the disease to attend the Cardiff event. She shared her personal experience with the charity, saying, “Ovacome has been just brilliant for me, it’s so community-based, so understanding and so supportive, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s yourself or a family member affected by this disease – Ovacome will support you, so come along and get involved!”
