Befriending Networks, an Edinburgh-based charity that supports organizations in creating meaningful connections, has announced the launch of their new training program, Connected Lives. The program will be available in 20 locations across Scotland and online, with the first event taking place in Edinburgh on Tuesday, August 11th.
The program aims to equip staff and volunteers at third sector organizations in Scotland with the skills and confidence to support those living with dementia. Social isolation has been identified as a key risk factor for developing dementia, and it is estimated that if everyone kept socially connected, there would be five fewer cases of dementia for every 100 people who currently develop it.
The six-hour training session (3.5 hours for online sessions) will be led by experienced facilitator Edel Roddy, who has a passion for creating spaces for connection and learning. The course will include research, case studies, and practical advice, with opportunities for discussion and peer learning. It is CPD-accredited and also includes access to the Connected Lives Good Practice Guide, a new dementia training resource.
In addition, Befriending Networks has commissioned videographer Sean Catlin to create a series of short films showcasing good practice from Scottish charities that offer services to build social connections for people living with dementia. The impact of the Connected Lives project on staff, volunteers, and carers will also be evaluated by Dr. Victoria Jupp Kina.
The Connected Lives project is funded by the Scottish Government’s Dementia Resilient Communities Fund and aligns with the government’s dementia strategy, which prioritizes the development of a skilled and knowledgeable workforce with access to high-quality dementia education and training.
Befriending Networks’ Learning and Development Manager, Victoria Galloway, shared her excitement about the project, stating that she has seen the powerful difference meaningful connections can make for people living with dementia. She hopes that these events will bring together individuals to highlight the positive impact they can have and support them in building and nurturing meaningful relationships.
Interested individuals can find out more and book their free training session at befriending.co.uk/dementia-training. However, places are limited to two per organization, and early booking is advised due to expected high demand.
