New Book Reveals Cutting-Edge Research on ME/CFS and Long Covid
Tuesday 5 August, 2025 – A new book, Understanding ME/CFS & Strategies for Healing, has been making waves in the medical community for its groundbreaking research on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Long Covid. The book, written by Irish ME/CFS patient and advocate Patrick Ussher, has been featured in The Irish Times and reviewed in The Medical Independent, one of Ireland’s leading publications for healthcare professionals.
Ussher’s book presents a comprehensive summary of a landmark research model developed by German scientists Prof. Carmen Scheibenbogen and Prof. Klaus Wirth. Their research proposes a “unifying model” of ME/CFS and Long Covid, offering insights into the complex disease mechanisms that have perplexed doctors and researchers for decades.
According to Ussher, the model describes a cascade of vicious physiological cycles, including autoimmunity, vascular dysfunction, and cellular energy failure, that could finally explain the diverse symptoms experienced by over 80 million people globally who are affected by ME/CFS and Long Covid.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the book is its introduction of Mitodicure, a compound being developed by Prof. Wirth to target the core cellular bottleneck believed to be at the heart of both ME/CFS and Long Covid. While funding is still being sought for clinical trials, Mitodicure is intended, in principle, to be curative.
In addition to summarizing the latest research, the book also offers practical treatment strategies for improving quality of life, all grounded in emerging research and patient insights. Ussher, who has lived with ME/CFS for seven years, runs a YouTube channel dedicated to distilling the latest research and treatment strategies for fellow patients.
ME/CFS and Long Covid continue to be under-researched, under-treated, and often misunderstood, making Ussher’s book a valuable resource for patients and healthcare professionals alike. The book has also been reviewed by The Medical Independent, with reviewer George Winter stating, “Understanding ME/CFS & Strategies for Healing offers one patient’s view through the long grass which has grown around an illness badly served by medical dogmatists, and it is a view which readers have much to learn from. It could herald a sea change in how ME/CFS is researched, managed, treated… and, just possibly, cured.”

Ussher is also available for interviews on his YouTube channel, where he recently conducted an interview with Prof. Wirth discussing both the research and the development of Mitodicure.
