London, UK – In an effort to shed light on the often invisible issue of coercive control, a powerful new staging of The A Word is set to hit three London theatres this summer.
Originally staged in 2023, the play has been re-imagined for 2025 by best-selling author, filmmaker, and playwright Jade Winters. The new version delves deeper into the quiet and insidious reality of emotional abuse, highlighting how even the closest of friends can miss the signs.
The play will open at the Golden Goose Theatre on August 23, before moving to the Drayton Arms Theatre on September 14 and 15, and the Bread & Roses Theatre on November 9 and 10. This intimate and emotionally charged drama explores the dangerous consequences of love turning into control, and the damaging effects of silence.
At its core, The A Word offers an intimate look into emotional abuse within a lesbian relationship, a story that is rarely portrayed on stage with such closeness and sensitivity. The audience is taken on a journey with Brooke, who is trapped in a cycle of coercive control, while her friends are left to grapple with confusion and unspoken truths. In this world, silence can be just as dangerous as words.
“When The A Word was first staged, I knew it had an important message to convey,” says Winters. “This new version brings the audience even closer to Brooke’s life, allowing them to recognize similar signs in their own relationships or in those of their friends. It shows just how far someone can fall without others realizing.”
Winters, known for her acclaimed novels that have been read by audiences worldwide, has established herself as a creator of honest and relatable stories centered on women’s lives. With this play, she brings the same emotional depth and authenticity to the stage, offering a rare and unflinching portrayal of coercive control in a lesbian relationship.
