London, 23/06/2026 – A recent study conducted by solar technology platform and installer, MakeMyHouseGreen, has revealed that installing a solar system today could save a typical home in the UK an average of £1,285 per year. This is a significant increase from the £913 in savings that the same roof would have provided just five years ago, representing a 41% surge in cost savings.
The findings were based on the re-assessment of 240 British homes using the latest panel technology. The results showed that the increase in savings can be attributed to the advancements in solar panel technology, with a typical panel now generating 480 watts compared to 365 watts five years ago. This has resulted in an average modelled generation of 6,394 kilowatt hours per year, up from 4,851 kilowatt hours in 2021.
Furthermore, the rise in the price of electricity over the past five years has also contributed to the increase in savings. According to Ofgem’s chief executive, Jonathan Brearley, electricity prices are expected to remain high and volatile, making self-generated energy from solar panels even more valuable. This combination of more powerful panels and higher electricity prices has resulted in a 41% increase in savings for homeowners.
Llewellyn Kinch, CEO and Founder of MakeMyHouseGreen, explains, “Two things have moved in solar’s favour. The panels are more powerful, so the same roof area delivers higher output. At the same time, the grid electricity that solar replaces costs more, so every unit you generate yourself is more valuable.”
However, Kinch also notes that solar may not be the best fit for every home. He advises that homeowners should have their roof assessed to determine if solar is a suitable option, taking into account factors such as roof orientation, shading, and energy consumption habits.
MakeMyHouseGreen uses a detailed modelling process to assess a home’s energy generation and consumption in half-hourly intervals over a full year. This allows for accurate and tailored system designs for each specific property. The company’s Green Guru advisors provide honest advice to customers, including informing them when solar may not be the right solution for their home. On average, customers can save between £800 and £1,200 per year on their electricity bills, with a typical payback period of 6 to 8 years. MakeMyHouseGreen has received an Excellent rating on Trustpilot, with over 700 reviews, and is a trusted partner of several councils, including the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Cotswold District Council, and North Norfolk District Council.
