New Study Reveals High Levels of Boiler Anxiety among UK Homeowners
A recent survey commissioned by Boiler Installer Pro found that four in five UK homeowners worry about their boiler breaking down. The survey, conducted by Pollfish, targeted 350 homeowners aged 35-64 and revealed that 79.7% of respondents worry about their boiler at least some of the time.
Of those who worry, 29.4% think about the possibility regularly while 50.3% worry occasionally. More than half of the respondents (57.1%) have already experienced an unexpected boiler breakdown, with 91.5% reporting major or moderate disruption. This includes 30% of homeowners who had no heating or hot water for days and 61.5% who had the issue resolved within a day or two but described it as very stressful.
The survey also highlighted a significant financial-readiness gap among homeowners. In the event of a boiler breakdown tomorrow, 16.9% said it would be a serious financial crisis and 32.3% said it would be very difficult, although they would manage somehow. Combined, 49.1% would face a crisis or extreme difficulty. Additionally, 30.0% could cover the cost but said it would have a financial impact.
Only 15.4% of respondents reported having emergency savings set aside for such an event, while 5.4% had boiler cover. The survey also showed that 45.1% of homeowners have delayed replacing their boiler, with 71.5% citing cost as the main reason for the delay.
Lee Devlin, spokesperson for Boiler Installer Pro, commented on the survey results, saying, “These results highlight the strong connection between boiler anxiety and household finances. Many respondents have already experienced the disruption of an unexpected boiler failure, but the main reason for postponing replacement is cost. With only a small percentage of respondents having emergency savings or boiler cover, a sudden breakdown could have a significant financial impact on many homeowners.”

The Boiler Breakdown Survey was conducted in September 2026 via Pollfish among 350 UK homeowners aged 35-64. The survey was restricted to homeowners and used single-choice questions with conditional follow-ups.
