London Woman Cycles in Memory of Sister Who Lost Battle with Brain Tumour
A woman from northwest London has embarked on a cycling challenge in honor of her younger sister who passed away from a brain tumour at the young age of 20. Sarah De Groen, 39, from Edgware, is aiming to cycle Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way in just 20 days to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity.
The charity provides support to those affected by a brain tumour diagnosis, funds research into the condition, and advocates for improved care. De Groen hopes to not only honor the memory of her sister, Rachel De Groen, but also raise awareness and funds to help others fighting this devastating disease.
Rachel was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour, later identified as a diffuse midline glioma, at the age of 19 and was given only three months to live. She defied the odds and lived for another 15 months, inspiring her sister to make the most out of every day.
“Rachel was the youngest of seven children and had the gentlest nature,” De Groen shared. “She loved being at home, playing the piano, art, fashion, butterflies, and anything pink. Most of all, she loved children. My own children adored her. They couldn’t wait for Aunty Rachel to come over because they knew she’d get down on the floor and play with them for hours.”
De Groen also reflected on the early signs that something was wrong with her sister, noting changes in her personality rather than physical symptoms. Despite seeking medical help, Rachel’s condition continued to deteriorate until she was finally diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour.
In the months leading up to Rachel’s passing, De Groen and her siblings made the most of their time together, arranging special trips and experiences when Rachel was well enough. They also organized her brother’s wedding as quickly as possible so that Rachel could be there. “Our attitude was that every day could be her last day,” De Groen explained. “It changed my perspective. Losing Rachel made me realize how precious life is and made me delve into what it really means to live.”
In honor of her sister’s memory and to raise funds for brain tumour research, De Groen has embarked on a challenging 1600-mile cycling journey around Ireland. This is not her first cycling challenge, having previously cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats. However, she hopes that this new challenge will raise even more awareness and funds for this cause that is close to her heart.
