On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the world will come together to celebrate International Friendship Day. This year, the focus is on helping to end the isolation experienced by many cancer patients.
From Me to You, a national charity dedicated to inspiring people to write letters to those living with cancer, is calling for more support to help achieve this goal. The charity is urging individuals to become a Friend of the charity and make regular donations to support their efforts in bringing friendship and connection to those in need.
According to statistics, one in three people living with cancer will face loneliness. In light of this, From Me to You is asking for more people to participate in their Donate A Letter program, which has seen a significant increase in demand. The charity is also seeking regular donations through their “Friends of From Me” scheme to help fund their efforts.
From Me to You promotes the power of letters in creating connections and offering comfort to friends, family, and even strangers going through cancer. Last year, the charity sent out 13,500 letters to cancer patients across the UK. For some recipients, these letters serve as a welcomed distraction from their treatment, while for others, they are a lifeline.
Co-founder of From Me to You, Alison Hitchcock, stated, “Everyone needs friends to help them through difficult times in life, but all too often we hear that people living with cancer feel so alone. Sometimes even the closest friends don’t know what to say when someone they love has been diagnosed with cancer. This is why receiving a letter, even from a total stranger, can be more powerful than anyone can imagine.”
Hitchcock further explained that the charity’s mission requires resources and financial support to continue sending letters to those in need. As a small charity, their overhead costs are low, and donations go towards purchasing basic supplies like stamps and envelopes. A donation of just £6 a month can cover the cost of eight stamps, ensuring that every month, eight people will receive letters to brighten their darkest days. By the end of the year, 96 people will have experienced the joy of receiving a letter.
Individuals interested in becoming a Friend of From Me to You can sign up on the charity’s website. Those looking to donate or receive a letter can also sign up on their website.
