Innovative Mobile Technology “Nanci” Launches to Support Patients in Rural Tennessee Hospital

Lean6Health, a pioneering medical technology startup based in Oneida, has joined forces with Big South Fork Medical Center to introduce its groundbreaking mobile application, “Nanci.”

Nanci represents a novel approach to providing post-hospitalization support to patients. Depending on the nature of the patient’s medical procedure, they will receive scheduled check-ins via their mobile phones. Nanci will then use the patient’s responses to offer guidance and interactive assistance during their recovery journey.

Scott McNamara, Co-founder, and CEO of Lean6Health, highlighted the need for modernizing the post-discharge process, stating, “Today, we rely on a stack of discharge paperwork to help patients.  That’s 1970s technology. Nanci modernizes this process.”

Rural hospitals face unique challenges, including a significant number of avoidable readmissions that incur high costs. According to the NIH, 65% of readmissions in the US could potentially be avoided, costing the healthcare system nearly $40 billion annually. By offering real-time support through mobile devices, Lean6Health aims to save hospitals both time and money.

Moreover, Nanci has the potential to save lives. McNamara explained, “As an example, for every hour that sepsis goes undiagnosed, mortality increases by 7%.  If Nanci can help find post-operative sepsis and the patient is instructed to call their care team right away, we can get ahead of a possibly deadly infection.”

Nanci’s scope of support encompasses various healthcare fields, including emergency medicine, surgery, behavioral health, dental care, oncology, and more.

Numerous major hospital systems across the United States are closely monitoring the progress of the pilot program at Big South Fork. Hospitals such as Covenant Health, Tennova, UMass Memorial, Trinity Health, and Adventist Healthcare are among them. Following the successful completion of the pilot, Lean6Health intends to roll out Nanci nationwide.

In 2024, Lean6Health plans to introduce an optional Artificial Intelligence feature within Nanci, enabling patients to access recovery-related information without the need to contact their doctor directly.

Nanci fully complies with HIPAA regulations and is available for download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, accessible to patients once their healthcare provider has enrolled them in the system.
