A nostalgic fashion favourite from the 1990s is making a stylish comeback in the UK.
Shadow Shifter, a US-based clothing company known for its colour-changing fabric innovation, has introduced its thermochromic t-shirts to Amazon UK, bringing back a trend once seen in pop culture magazines, television shows, and bustling high streets.
Inspired by the famously heat-reactive garments from the late 80s and early 90s, the new collection is the brainchild of Karl Clayton, Founder and CEO of Shadow Shifter.
“When I first saw the heat-reactive, colour-changing clothing I was immediately fascinated,” said Karl.
Having relocated from the UK to the United States in the late 1990s, Karl remained captivated by the original craze and dedicated over two decades to improving the technology behind the garments.
The end result is a durable, machine-washable, and heat-resistant version of the iconic fashion staple.
“As a computer programmer back then, I was drawn to the technology of it. I believed the technology could be better, and over the years I’ve done just that. I am proud to be bringing it back to the UK with the quality and durability it always needed.”
Unlike the original versions, Shadow Shifter’s t-shirts utilise a proprietary thermochromic dye that responds to body heat while withstanding frequent wear, laundry cycles, and exposure to heat.
Karl now hopes to reignite enthusiasm for colour-changing fashion among both adults and children. The full product range is now available to UK shoppers via Amazon, giving a new generation the chance to enjoy this eye-catching innovation—and offering a dose of nostalgia to those who remember the trend’s first wave.
All Shadow Shifter garments are made in the United States. The company also provides thermochromic dyeing services to brands and manufacturers wishing to incorporate colour-change features into their own lines.
