Historic Child Cruelty Case Survivor’s Daughter Transforms Tragedy into Triumph with Three Peaks Challenge for The Tony Hudgell Foundation

“Daughter of Historic Child Cruelty Case Survivor to Take on Three Peaks Challenge for The Tony Hudgell Foundation”

London, UK – Jess Metcalf, the daughter of Frances Bentley, who survived the UK’s first publicised child cruelty case in 1964, is set to take on the Three Peaks Challenge on June 7th to raise funds for The Tony Hudgell Foundation.

Frances Bentley was just two months old when she suffered 52 broken bones at the hands of her father. Despite the horrific abuse, her case did not result in a conviction due to insufficient evidence, highlighting the shortcomings of the justice system at the time.

Now, 50 years later, another child, Tony Hudgell, has faced unimaginable abuse at the hands of his biological parents. Unlike Frances’s case, Tony’s abusers were convicted and sentenced to the maximum penalty, with sentences now increased under “Tony’s Law.” His remarkable survival and the outpouring of support he received inspired the creation of The Tony Hudgell Foundation, a charity dedicated to supporting children affected by abuse and neglect.

“When I came across Tony’s story and learned about the foundation’s work, it felt deeply personal,” said Jess. “My mother didn’t receive the justice or support she deserved, but now, children like Tony do. I want to be part of that change.”

Jess has been training diligently to take on the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge, which involves climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon in just 24 hours. Her goal is to raise funds for a life-changing initiative by The Tony Hudgell Foundation. This year, the foundation plans to take 26 families, approximately 100 people, on a three-night trip to Lapland. This trip will offer these families joy, healing, and the chance to connect with others who have experienced similar trauma.

“This challenge is for my mum, for Tony, and for every child who deserves safety, happiness, and a little bit of magic,” Jess added.

To support Jess on her journey and help send these families to Lapland, donations can be made at https://www.justgiving.com/page/veryjessica.
