Historic Albion House Relaunches as The White Star Line Hotel Under Local Stewardship

Last Updated on: 3rd July 2025, 06:05 pm

Liverpool’s iconic Albion House, the former headquarters of the renowned White Star Line, has reopened as The White Star Line Hotel, marking an exciting revival for this historic waterfront landmark. Now under the care of new local ownership, the Grade II listed structure is poised to reclaim its stature as a hallmark of Liverpool’s rich hospitality scene.

Once the beating heart of a global shipping empire, the building began its phased reopening on 20 June. This resurgence is the result of tireless dedication from local entrepreneurs Brian Gamble and Christopher Carline of Albion House Liverpool Limited. Their vision blends heritage restoration with renewed purpose and pride.

“I know this building inside out, having served as General Manager during its heyday,” said Brian Gamble. “It’s a shame Albion House has been somewhat neglected over the years, but with the right care, attention, and dedication, we are confident she will regain her former splendour. As a proud Liverpudlian, this is a personal labour of love, and I cannot wait to see her restored to the grandeur she has always deserved.”

Gamble, whose previous role was as General Manager at the five-star Vale Resort in South Wales, brings a strong background in premium hospitality. He’s partnered with Chris Carline—Director of The Shankly Hotel and grandson of Liverpool FC icon Bill Shankly—who shares an emotional connection to both the building and the city.

“As proud Liverpudlians, we are obsessed with restoring Albion House to the level of grandeur she deserves. Rebranding as The White Star Line Hotel, our goal is to resurrect White Star as a hospitality brand – a romantic vision, driven by our deep connection to this building and the city,” said Carline.

Constructed between 1896 and 1898, Albion House served as the headquarters of the White Star Line, forever linked to Liverpool’s maritime past and the legacy of the Titanic. The name remains etched in history as a symbol of elegance and service. Though the site operated briefly as a hotel from 2014, it closed in February 2025 before being promptly revived by its new custodians.

Guests can now enjoy a soft reopening featuring weekend stays in select rooms, the stylish rooftop bar “The Quarter Deck,” and exclusive event access to the Grand Hall. In due course, the entire hotel—including its lower ground spa—will be fully operational.

“This is a long-term project we want to do properly,” Carline added. “We’re focused on delivering a solid guest experience, building the brand, and inviting guests to join us on this journey. The honesty, vision, and collective effort will put White Star and Albion House back where they belong.”
