Emporia, a European smartphone brand, commits two million euros to implement EU Energy Label.

European consumers can now be assured of the energy efficiency and sustainability of their mobile phones, thanks to the implementation of strict new EU approval rules. As of summer 2025, manufacturers must adhere to these regulations in order to sell their devices within the European Union.

Eveline Pupeter, owner and managing director of European smartphone specialist emporia, explains that this was a challenging process for her company. “It was an unprecedented challenge,” she says. “The entire process cost us around two million euros – a significant investment for a medium-sized Austrian company.”

Under the new EU label, which is already familiar on products such as washing machines and refrigerators, each smartphone is evaluated for energy efficiency, durability, and repairability. The label ranks each device from A (excellent) to G (poor) and includes a QR code that links directly to a database with full product details.

Despite the significant investment and extensive work involved in software development, hardware engineering, and product management, Pupeter believes that this initiative is a positive milestone for her company. “We see this as an investment in the future – one that allows us to strengthen our position as a European manufacturer and compete fairly with producers from Asia and the USA,” she says.

The new EU label also benefits consumers by providing clear and comparable information about their mobile phones. This includes details such as the number of charging cycles a battery can handle, repairability, and resistance to water and dust.
