Heal Rewilding, a national nature recovery charity, has announced a new virtual exploration experience for its supporters. Thanks to a partnership with Stitch Surveying, the charity’s Heal Somerset site can now be accessed through an interactive digital mapping system and drone tour.
With thousands of supporters from across the UK and 98 countries around the world, Heal Rewilding has become a global movement. However, many of its supporters are unable to physically visit the charity’s first rewilding site, Heal Somerset, which was acquired in 2022.
Through the newly created interactive digital map and drone tour, anyone can now virtually explore Heal Somerset and experience the rewilding project’s landscape firsthand. The website features video clips, photographic stills, and 360° views, all accessible through icons on the interactive digital map. Additionally, visitors can follow a mapped circular walk digitally, providing an immersive experience through the land.
This technology allows for a comprehensive exploration of the Heal Somerset site, showcasing variations in tree and plant species across different fields. The charity plans to update the imagery annually to showcase the transformation of the landscape through rewilding. This data will serve as evidence of the effectiveness of rewilding, supplementing the regular habitat and species surveys conducted by the Heal Somerset team.
The interactive map was generously created and donated by Chris Stitchman of Stitch Surveying Ltd, a company that supports nature recovery through data-driven storytelling. Using advanced drone mapping technology, the company produces aerial imagery and 3D models of natural habitats, providing landowners with a comprehensive view of their land from canopy to soil, even in inaccessible areas.
The virtual exploration experience is now live on the Heal Somerset website, along with cinematic drone footage of the land. To explore Heal Somerset virtually, visit https://www.healsomerset.org.uk/visit-virtually.
