Durban High School Grants Full Rugby Scholarship to SOS Africa Sponsored Child, Potential Future Shark Star

SOS Africa’s Elvino Awarded Full Rugby Scholarship by Top Ranked Durban High School

Tuesday 16 April, 2024 – SOS Africa is pleased to announce that one of its students, Elvino, has been awarded a full rugby scholarship by Durban High School. This prestigious school is known for its academic excellence and is also a feeder-school for the renowned Sharks rugby team.

Elvino first joined SOS Africa’s Grabouw Education Programme in 2014, when he was only in Grade 1. Over the years, he showed great potential as a rugby player and was later recruited by Drostdy Technical College in January 2021. There, he excelled both academically and on the rugby field. During pre-season matches, Elvino’s exceptional skills caught the eye of a Durban High School Scout, who wasted no time in offering him a full scholarship to complete his high school education in KwaZulu Natal. Elvino accepted the offer and is now embarking on an exciting new chapter in his life.

Expressing his excitement, Elvino said, “I am very grateful for this opportunity to play for Durban High School. Rugby is my passion and my dream is to play it professionally one day. I would like to thank my sponsors at SOS Africa for always believing in me. I hope to make them proud.”

Elvino’s journey to success has been a collective effort, with unwavering support from his family, friends, and community. His parents, Elizabeth and John, have been his number one fans and are overjoyed with his achievement. They said, “Elvino’s family and friends are all ecstatic! Durban High School is a great institution that will provide him with fantastic opportunities now and in the future. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to SOS Africa for supporting Elvino since he was six years old in Grade 1. Without their support, his future would have been uncertain. We know that Elvino is eager to stay in touch with Matt and his SOS Africa family.”

Elvino was eager to share his success with his SOS Africa family at Grabouw High School. In just a few days of joining Durban High School, he has already helped the rugby team win one of their opening matches of the new season.

Founder of SOS Africa, Matt Crowcombe, expressed his pride in Elvino’s journey from a primary school student in Grabouw to a talented rugby player at Drostdy and now a scholarship recipient at Durban High School. He said, “Elvino is a remarkable young man who has worked hard and shown great dedication to earn this life-changing opportunity. He is an inspiration to us all, and we wish him every success for his bright future. And if we have to become Sharks fans one day, then so be it!”
