Llandudno Church Aims for World Record with Iconic Seaside Look
Llandudno, UK – Holy Trinity Church in Llandudno, Wales is gearing up for a world record attempt on Saturday, August 22nd during their annual Family Fun Day event. The church is calling on attendees to help revive a classic British seaside image – the knotted handkerchief worn as an improvised sun hat.
The event, set to take place at 3pm, aims to gather the largest number of people wearing knotted handkerchiefs on their heads. The church hopes to not only break a world record, but also raise funds for a meaningful cause. All proceeds from the event will go towards a stained-glass window at Holy Trinity in memory of the victims of the Wormhout Massacre of 1940.
The Wormhout Massacre, which occurred during the retreat to Dunkirk, saw around 80 British and French prisoners of war killed by SS troops after surrendering. Among the casualties were eight servicemen from Llandudno who had trained in the town with a Royal Artillery unit.
Reverend Vince Morris of Holy Trinity Church says, “There’s something wonderfully Llandudno about hundreds of people standing around in knotted handkerchiefs, so we thought, why not try for a world record?” He adds, “It should be a lot of fun, but it is also helping us raise money for a memorial that means a great deal to the town.”
Interested participants must register before 2:30pm on the day of the event to receive a handkerchief and be officially included in the record attempt. A minimum donation of £5 is required, which includes the handkerchief.
The Family Fun Day, organized by the Bro Tudno Ministry Area, will run from 11am to 4pm at Holy Trinity Church in Llandudno. Attendees can look forward to a variety of games, food, and family activities.
