Internet Safety Tips for Today’s Digital Generation
The internet has become an indispensable part of our daily lives, providing instant answers, video calls across oceans, and streaming services. However, for almost half of the global population, this has always been the norm.
Generation Z (born from the late 1990s to the early 2010s) and Generation Alpha (born in the early 2010s to the mid-2020s) have grown up in a world where the internet and digital technology are a constant presence. With a combined population of approximately 45% of the world’s inhabitants, it is crucial to address the safety concerns that come with this digital evolution.
Ignas Valancius, head of engineering at NordPass, says, “The internet has brought us knowledge, cooperation, and convenience, but it also has a darker, more complex side. The very network that empowers us with endless information also bombards us with misinformation and lies, and our personal information is often harvested and traded without our knowledge. As we celebrate the web’s creation, let us also not forget about the perils it holds.”
So how can we stay safe in this digital age? It all starts with something as simple as good password hygiene. Valancius compares passwords to keys, saying, “They are like keys to our doors. Yet, ironically, we often treat them with startling carelessness, opting for easily guessable combinations or reusing the same password for multiple accounts. It’s the digital equivalent of leaving your front door unlocked, your car keys in the ignition, and your wallet on the kitchen table — simultaneously.”
NordPass recommends the following tips for staying safe online:
– Use strong and unique passwords for every account, combining letters, symbols, and numbers.
– Enable multi-factor authentication whenever possible.
– Consider using passkeys, a new and alternative method of online authentication.
– Keep all devices and software up to date by installing updates as soon as they are released.
– Be cautious of clicking on links in unsolicited emails or suspicious social media posts and messages. Instead, type the website address directly into your browser.
– Never disclose personal information or login credentials, even if the request appears to be from a legitimate source such as your bank or the police.
– Use secure Wi-Fi connections and avoid using unprotected public networks.
– Celebrating World Wide Web Day
Every year on August 1, World Wide Web Day is celebrated to commemorate the invention and impact of the World Wide Web, colloquially known as the internet. This day highlights how the WWW has revolutionized communication, access to information, and global connectivity, while also acknowledging challenges like online privacy and misinformation.
Valancius adds, “It’s a curious paradox that the great gift of connection these days is often fraught with disconnection and digital anxiety. Whatever happens next, we will leave digital artifacts behind us, and future archaeologists will probably want to excavate data centers, not just the soil. So let’s raise a glass to the ARPANET, the internet’s predecessor, and its team, as well as to Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who decided not to patent the protocols he invented. Go find something new today and stay safe online.”
