CCS Industry to Follow Pace CCS in Implementing New Corrosion Guideline

London-based company Pace CCS has been selected by the Energy Institute to develop a new guideline on corrosion management for the carbon capture, transport, and storage (CCS) industry. The “Good Practice Guideline” will provide operators with a structured framework to effectively manage the unique and high-risk corrosion challenges posed by impure CO2 streams.

One of the major concerns for the industry is the formation of highly corrosive acids from trace impurities, which can threaten the integrity of pipelines, storage tanks, and wells. This new project builds on Pace CCS’s existing collaboration with the Energy Institute, having previously researched and published their guidance on hazard analysis for CCS facilities.

Dr Cameron Stewart, Upstream Technical Manager at the Energy Institute, expressed his delight in having Pace CCS join the Industry Steering Group to develop this important piece of international good practice guidance. He noted that the guideline will provide crucial information on corrosion and broader asset integrity management for the global CCS industry.

Matthew Healey, Managing Director of Pace CCS, emphasized the critical role of asset integrity in the emerging CCS industry. He stated that the guideline, drawing from their extensive experience and expertise in CCS project complexities, will address core uncertainties and ensure safe and reliable long-term performance for global decarbonization.

The new guideline aims to address vulnerabilities highlighted by past project challenges, providing the industry with essential knowledge for the safe and efficient development of CCS infrastructure.

The Energy Institute is a leading professional body for the energy sector, based in London. Their mission is to accelerate the transition to a safe, secure, and sustainable energy system by developing and sharing knowledge, skills, and good practice.

Pace CCS, based in London and Kuala Lumpur, is a global leader in delivering design for CCS projects. With experience in over 100 CCS projects worldwide, they are well-equipped to provide the industry with the necessary tools and expertise for successful CCS infrastructure development.
