Animal welfare charity Naturewatch Foundation has announced the opening of its annual Pet Rescue Grant, inviting UK rescues to apply for funding to support animals impacted by the low-welfare and illegal pet trade. The grant, now in its third year, aims to provide financial assistance to rescues caring for dogs, cats and rabbits who have been exploited for profit.
According to Natalie Harney, Campaign Manager at Naturewatch Foundation, the grant is needed now more than ever. She explains that many rescue animals arrive with complex physical and behavioural needs, making their care both challenging and costly. The grant, which offers up to £10,000 for UK-registered charities and CICs with an income of up to £5 million, and £1,000 for unregistered charities and community organisations, can be used towards various expenses related to the rescue and rehabilitation of these animals, such as veterinary treatment, behavioural support, and specialist equipment or training.
Harney emphasizes the importance of supporting reputable rescues and making responsible decisions when it comes to adopting or buying a pet, in order to put an end to the exploitation of animals for profit. Naturewatch Foundation campaigns to end low-welfare and illegal breeding, and has previously revealed that the majority of puppies in the UK come from unknown sources, with only a small percentage coming from regulated and inspected breeders.
While the charity supports regulation of the puppy trade, it believes that current rules and their enforcement are not adequately protecting dogs and their puppies. Naturewatch Foundation has welcomed the UK government’s commitment to ending puppy farming, but urges swift action to make this a reality.
In addition, the organization has recently supported an open letter to Pets at Home, coordinated by Rescue Not Retail, calling for an end to the sale of live animals in stores. The charity believes that this will help reduce impulse buying of small animals, including rabbits, rodents, fish, and reptiles, whose welfare and care needs are often more complex than new owners realize.
Expressions of interest for the Pet Rescue Grant open from 24 January to 14 February 2026. Rescues can find out more information at naturewatch.org/petrescuegrant.
