/**Aspora Launches Campaign to Encourage NRIs to Update Indian Bank Accounts**
Aspora, a financial platform dedicated to serving the Indian diaspora, has launched a new campaign titled “Chitthi Ayi Hai” (“A letter has arrived”) in conjunction with World Financial Planning Day. This initiative, which spans radio, letters, and social media, aims to address a crucial oversight that many Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) encounter: the management of their Indian bank accounts.
The campaign utilizes a letter that resembles an official notice, yet is not one, and is being dispatched to NRI households, content creators, and journalists across the UK. The correspondence, which addresses the recipient as “xyz”, is designed to spark discussions among NRIs about a topic that often goes unaddressed.
When Indians relocate overseas, they generally focus on logistical tasks—such as securing visas, employment, and housing—while neglecting an important financial obligation: updating their bank accounts in India. Many NRIs continue to operate regular savings accounts as residents long after they have moved abroad. Under India’s Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), it is mandatory for NRIs to convert their regular savings accounts to Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts. Failure to comply with this regulation can lead to significant legal repercussions, including fines that may amount to multiple lakhs of rupees.
The letters sent by Aspora feature a reference number and numbered points, clearly identifying the sender as Aspora—not a tax office or governmental body. A pivotal line contained within the letter states, “India and the United Kingdom exchange financial account information every year under the Common Reporting Standard.”
Instead of providing specific information on accounts or outstanding dues, the letter is strategically crafted to provoke a single thought: “Wait, if this letter isn’t real, could I have a problem that leads to a real one?” The campaign guides NRIs toward taking proactive measures regarding their Indian bank accounts, including the possibility of opening an Aspora NRI account.
The campaign’s structure deliberately combines elements of curiosity and mild concern, creating an impactful moment for recipients when they first perceive the letter as an official communication. This brief period of anxiety serves to instigate immediate action, prompting NRIs to verify the status of their accounts.
Parth Garg, Founder of Aspora, emphasized the importance of the campaign, stating, “Moving abroad is a huge change, but nobody gives you a guide for everything that comes after. Thousands of NRIs are living abroad with bank accounts back home that were never updated, and most don’t know it matters.” He added, “If one NRI reads it and thinks of three others who should see it, it has done its job.”
In tandem with the letter campaign, Aspora has launched advertisements on prominent UK radio stations, including Sunrise Radio, Sabras Radio, and Radio Nammude UK, to further emphasize the importance of managing Indian bank accounts. Content creators and journalists are also invited to open the letter on camera and share their reactions, amplifying its reach. Additionally, a short film featuring Garg will reflect a personal story relevant to the campaign, recounting an experience from his youth when a tax notice disrupted his family’s financial stability due to an unaltered bank account.
Garg conveyed the motivation behind the campaign, reflecting on his father’s experience: “No NRI family should have to open that envelope. That’s why we sent ours first.”
To encourage participation, Aspora is offering £50 of free digital gold to users upon their first transfer to an Aspora NRI account, which is established and maintained by Shivalik Small Finance Bank.
