Europiano, a project aimed at showcasing great piano works across Europe, came to a close on Make Music Day in Kyiv, where a concert featuring the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine and the Kyiv Camerata, under the baton of Keri-Lynn Wilson, was recorded in partnership with ARTE’s new associate broadcaster Suspilne.
The event, which connected eleven cities and featured performances by renowned pianists such as Martha Argerich, Bruce Liu, and Eric Lu, was broadcasted for over eight hours, from 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The cities included in the program were Vienna, Paris, Poznań, Stockholm, Strasbourg, Valencia, Athens, Hamburg, Lisbon, Wiesbaden, and now Kyiv.
According to Sylvie Stephan, Programme Director of ARTE GEIE, the purpose of this event was to bring people together through music, regardless of borders, languages, or countries. “Europe listens together, and Europe belongs together,” said Stephan.
Wolfgang Bergmann, Co-CEO of ARTE Deutschland, also emphasized the importance of including Ukraine as one of the venues for the event. “It was no small feat to achieve, but we are truly delighted that it worked out with our Ukrainian partner broadcaster Suspilne,” said Bergmann.
The concert in Kyiv featured a performance of Borys Lyatoshynsky’s Slavic Piano Concerto by Maksym Shadko, with Keri-Lynn Wilson as the conductor. “We are deeply grateful for the invitation to perform as part of europiano, which allowed us to not only perform for Ukrainian audiences but also for audiences across Europe,” said Wilson.
The event also featured Yulianna Avdeeva opening the afternoon from the Wiener Konzerthaus with a performance of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. “As pianists, we rarely find ourselves in the same place at the same time. Having an entire day dedicated to our instrument will bring us together, at least in spirit,” said Avdeeva.
The program was presented throughout the day by ARTE host Annette Gerlach and pianist Louis Philippson from the ZDF studio in Mainz.
