Award-winning director Christine Edzard’s highly anticipated film, “The Man With The Plan”, starring Simon Callow as William Beveridge, is set to release in cinemas nationwide on September 20th.
The thought-provoking film, which has been six years in the making, explores the relevance of Beveridge’s radical vision to eliminate the Five Giants of Want, Disease, Squalor, Idleness and Ignorance and create a more equitable society. With a star-studded cast and a powerful performance from Callow, the film asks its audience why, if it was possible to formulate such a plan in 1942, are we worse off today? And who benefits from this?
Presented in a unique verbatim style, the film features the words of Beveridge and other recognizable politicians, quoted from their speeches and writings. It follows the journey of a young person named Flea, played by screen newcomer Sophie Jenkin, as she discovers Beveridge’s visionary plan and explores the political decisions, missed opportunities, and social inequalities that have shaped Britain since its release.
The film also features appearances from leading academics and campaigners, including Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Kate Pickett, Danny Dorling, and others who continue to address the inequalities identified by Beveridge over eighty years ago.
Combining fantasy, political satire, allegories, and documentary, “The Man With The Plan” offers a timely reflection on Britain’s past, present, and future, ultimately calling for collective action. Directed by Oscar-nominated director Christine Edzard, known for her critically acclaimed films such as “Little Dorrit” and “The Fool”, this is an ambitious and thought-provoking film that challenges the conventions of commercial cinema.
