Yorkshire Songstress Takes the Spotlight on Tokyo TV’s Karaoke Battle Stage

West Yorkshire Performer Shines on Japanese TV Show

On Friday, February 2nd, 2024, L J English, the talented singer from West Yorkshire, made headlines as he achieved a remarkable milestone during his second trip to Tokyo in December 2023.

LJ received a surprise Christmas present in the form of an invitation to showcase his exceptional talents on the prestigious television show, “Karaoke Battle,” broadcasted by Tokyo TV on January 28th, 2024.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity saw LJ perform one of the most challenging songs in the Japanese language, “O Matsuri Mambo” by Hibari Misora, all while donning his signature glittering sequin kimono, featuring half Union Jack and half Japanese flag, also known as the “Hi No Maru” in Japan.

The excitement of the moment was amplified by the presence of Masaaki Sakai, famously known as “Monkey” from the iconic Japanese ’70s TV show “Monkey,” also known as “Monkey Magic” in the UK and “Saiyuki” in Japan.

For LJ, sharing the stage with a legend like Masaaki was a dream come true, as he has been a devoted fan of the show since he was a young child.

As LJ concludes his second journey to Tokyo, the focus is on the incredible opportunity for a performer from Yorkshire to shine on the Japanese stage, bridging cultural boundaries and showcasing the universal language of music, while also promoting the growing relationship between the UK and Japan.

The highly-anticipated episode aired on Tokyo TV in Japan and was also streamed on the website TVer (https://tver.jp/episodes/epqya9mu7d).

L J English is a talented singer with a passion for Japanese music, specializing in covers of Showa Kayoukyoku and Enka songs from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Apart from his TV appearances, L J has also toured the globe, performing at festivals, stage shows, and charity events.
