A new theatrical production, The Miracle of Sheffield: Mum, Dad, Football & Me, is set to make its world premiere at the Library Theatre in Sheffield from 25 March to 23 April 2027. Written by Jonathan Maitland and starring Sheffield-born actor Thomas Craig, the play draws inspiration from a thrilling moment in sports history—the Sheffield Wednesday’s remarkable play-off comeback on 18 May 2023.

Craig, who is best known for his work on Murdoch Mysteries, followed the nail-biting match from Toronto, where he is currently filming. The experience sparked a written account that he shared on Owlstalk, which later was published in The Star. This storytelling captured the attention of Maitland, who recognized its potential for adaptation into a stage production.

The play transports audiences between the 1980s and present day, delving into the complexities of family relationships and the role football plays in uniting different generations, especially fathers and sons. Craig’s connection to Sheffield makes this premiere particularly special, allowing local audiences to enjoy a performance that is deeply rooted in his own experiences.

“I was thrilled to be able to turn Tommy’s true story into a play as it’s such a great tale,” Maitland remarked. “I’ve always wanted to write something which gets to the heart of the British love affair with football and with this play I hope we’ve done just that.”

Thomas Craig expressed his heartfelt connection to the project, stating, “Sheffield is not only my home, but the home of football. Wednesday has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was in Toronto for that match, but I felt every minute of it. This play brings together my love of football and the family memories that go with it. I can’t wait to share it with an audience in Sheffield.”

Director Robert Wolstenholme emphasized the broader themes of the play, saying, “I wouldn’t have wanted to direct this play if it was just about football – of course, it is about that and hilariously so when it comes to why people are fans and what fandom means. But I think it’s really about belonging, family and love. It’s a play with big laughs and a big heart and wanting to share that is why I’m involved.”

Tickets for The Miracle of Sheffield are priced between £20 and £27, including booking fees, and can be purchased at www.miracleofsheffield.com.

As I read about The Miracle of Sheffield, I felt a deep sense of excitement. The play seems to perfectly weave together the love for football with the powerful ties of family, making it an unmissable event for both local and visiting audiences. I am looking forward to seeing how this story of connection and nostalgia unfolds on stage.
